5K Speed Training

5k training runs 2014

This is what I’ve been up to for the last few weeks. I thought I’d go back to basics after my running mojo decided to hibernate and refused to come out of its hiding place after my holiday. Distance – Meh! Trail run – Meh! Run with the hounds – Meh! Nothing was giving me a satisfying run and I found myself quite happily walking along enjoying the views and not in the slightest bit interested in running!! Meh!!

What also helped was my lovely husband buying me a very expensive Garmin Forerunner 620. More data than you can shake a stick at!! The run is still feeling a bit Meh! but now I’m data crunching. My heart rate is through the roof!! How to I lower it? My cadence appears to tie in with my heart rate, hmmmm, that’s interesting.

  1. Mojo can be tricky little beggars once they decide to hide.
    I discovered mine just by doing the run every day for a month thing, minimum of a mile. This was easy to do every day as it was only ever starting out as a mile, this turned onto two which turned into three etc etc. I did no speed work other than weekly races (half maras, 5 ks, 10ks, marathons, road, off road, road etc) which I started out as all easy then speed up to tempo runs if I felt chasing someone in front. No pressure as they were just ways of upping my weekly and monthly mileage totals.

  2. I must admit, I’ve been getting back in to the shorter runs and running more parkruns rather than volunteering to get the old speed up a bit. It’s a good confidence booster! Well done you πŸ™‚

    • It’s an odd feeling going back to the shorter runs. I’ve also found I can run pretty fast when I want to lol! You’re spot on, it’s definitely a confidence booster πŸ˜‰

Interesting that you speed training…Some friends and I are both keen as mustard on speed work right now, me mainly due to an upcoming road marathon and realising I have become a real slow coach since training for ultras. What concerns me most is the fact it is quite enjoyable! Hope you get your mojo back πŸ™‚
